Aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) are preferable to use to store fuel supply due to the regulatory requirements and challenges associated with operating underground storage tanks. ASTs are typically used for the purpose of supplying fuel to emergency generators and fire pumps. The University currently owns and operates over 60 ASTs.
The federal and state environmental regulations for operating ASTs are different from the UST requirements. EPA implemented a series of regulations to establish clear standards on how to properly replace, install, remove, and operate ASTs. The goal of these rules is to establish inspection practices help to prevent hazardous materials from impacting groundwater resources.
To support this effort, the University’s Physical Plant Division (PPD) performs routine inspections for all University ASTs. The main emphasis of these inspections is to evaluate tank condition and integrity.
