Overview

The Environmental Quality Management Department (EQM) is responsible for facilitating the regulatory compliance  the management of the Storage Tank Program at the University of Kentucky (UK). This program includes Aboveground Storage Tanks and Underground Storage Tanks owned by the University. EQM assists and serves the University with: 

  • Registration of regulated storage tanks 
  • Regulatory interpretations and applicability 
  • Coordination of tank closures and removals 
  • Development of SPCC Plans, Response Plans, etc. 
  • Emergency Spill Response 
  • Investigating suspected and confirmed releases 
  • Notification of appropriate agencies when regulated substances are released 
  • Performing periodic audits to ensure all inspections and maintenance are completed as required 

 

UK must operate and maintain all tank systems in accordance with regulations promulgated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Kentucky Division of Waste Management (KDWM), and the Kentucky Office of the State Fire Marshall, to prevent the release of a regulated substance. This applies to storage tank systems located on the University main campus as well as off-campus facilities.
