Underground Storage Tanks (USTs) are tanks that have at least ten percent of their volume underground. Most USTs on campus are used to store fuel for emergency generators, ensuring the continuous operation of critical infrastructure during power outages. PPD performs routine inspections for all applicable University USTs. The objective of these inspections is to assess tank condition and integrity to prevent releases of regulated substances to the environment.
New/planned UST systems must meet the performance standards for tank fabrication, corrosion protection, spill and overfill prevention, operation, and release detection described in UST regulations and UK’s SPCC Plan.
EQM must be contacted prior to closure, whether it be temporary or permanent, or removal of any UST. When a project scope includes removal of UST systems, the removal must be coordinated with EQM. Environmental consultants will be hired to oversee UST system removals to ensure work is completed in compliance with environmental regulations, and soil remediation will be required if the soil surrounding the UST is found to be contaminated. EQM can assist project managers in selecting environmental consultants and contractors. All costs associated with the removal of UST systems, including soil remediation if required, will be the responsibility of the project as well as the installation, upgrade, and repair of UST systems.
Any UST scheduled for removal must follow all applicable regulatory procedures established by the EPA and KDWM. Only Kentucky Certified UST Contractors are legally permitted to remove USTs. The regulations for UST removals are designed to ensure that any possibility for contamination is properly managed to prevent environmental damage.
