Stormwater Educational Resources

This page is dedicated to offer public information related to general stormwater education and the UK Stormwater Program. The following information is organized for both Students (prospective and current) and Educators.

The Information for Students section displays a list of stormwater and water quality related courses offered through the University of Kentucky. The courses may be grouped to provide context in guiding the viewer to potential learning interests where they can further investigate the respective College's areas of study and cirriculum requirements.

The Information for Educators section displays resources offered at UK as well as other state and federal organizations to aid in developing lesson plans for all age groups. This section also offers information on how both students and educators alike can learn about the various ways that UK manages stormwater runoff by going on a walking tour of green infrastructure, having a professional share their expertise in a classrom, and participate in programs that improves water quality in their communities.

If you would like to learn more about the UK Stormwater Program including a topic of interest not covered in this page, please reach out to a stormwater professional at stormwater@uky.edu.

Information for Students Stormwater Related Classes

While this is not an exhaustive list, it should be a good start for those looking to take courses at the University of Kentucky related to stormwater management and water resources. If you are aware of additional courses that should be added to this curated list, please share them with Stormwater@uky.edu.

Information for Educators Educator Lesson Plans and Resources

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) offers a variety of K-12 water related lesson plans that can be used as is or adapted to a college level audience: . USEPA also offers tools to explore local water issues and engage students with water resource information specific to their location. Use their How’s my Waterway tool to explore local water issues.

The USEPA also offers a variety of educator tools and resources through their Soak Up the Rain program. This program focuses on the science behind and benefits of green infrastructure for stormwater management. These resources can be accessed at: .

The United Stated Geologic Survey (USGS) has developed their Water Science School to share a variety of educator resources that would be appropriate for use with a wide range of audiences for formal and informal education related to stormwater and water resources in general.

The State of Kentucky offers a variety of stormwater and water resource related lesson plans and teacher resources. The most comprehensive repository of educator resources can be found through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Stormwater School Curriculum and Teacher Resources page:

The University of Kentucky has multiple educators across campus that are trained and certified in the Project WET curriculum. Project WET has many lesson plans tailored for youth water resource education. These lesson plans can be readily adapted to college or professional audiences. To connect with a Project WET certified instructor, please send a request to: Stormwater@uky.edu.
